Sustainability is the ability to maintain a certain level of something – whether natural resources, educational practices, architectural heritage, or the general “feel” of a place. And when extended to community development, it sustainable practices promote a high-quality lifestyle in ways that don’t compromise the ability of future generations to do the same. At its deepest roots, sustainability is about relationships. It is a way of thinking that takes into account the inherent connections between ecology, design (architecture, interior, urban, furniture, etc.), economics, individuals, society and so on. It’s the big picture. The whole, rather than the sum of it's parts. It recognizes, for example, that in order to build a strong and long-lasting community, we have to look how we are building, what we are building with, and what we may be affecting down the road. It recognizes that the way we live impacts the environment and world that will inherited be by our grandchildren. It makes responsible, community-minded choices, so that the things we love will stay with us for a long, long, long time. Each day at newwalk, we take steps toward sustainability by operating with a triple bottom line: social progress, environmental responsibility and economic productivity. We employ the latest in environmentally sensitive construction methods and materials. We embrace community identity and cultural well-being. We’re driven by the guarantee of long-term economic benefits rather than small short-term gain. Put simply, with sustainability as our path as well as our mission, we’re doing the right thing . . . for everyone. |
